Male Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)
Used to increase hair growth and prevent further hair loss in men aged 18–41 years with mild to moderate hair loss.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) (Note: 5 mg dose is usually used for BPH)
Mechanism of Action
Finasteride inhibits Type II 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT is the androgen primarily responsible for hair follicle miniaturization in androgenetic alopecia.
By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride slows hair loss and promotes hair regrowth.
Dosage (Hair Loss Treatment)
1 tablet (1 mg) once daily, with or without food
Consistency is key—results typically appear after 3–6 months, and effects reverse if discontinued
Side Effects
(incidence: uncommon to rare)
Decreased libido
Erectile dysfunction
Ejaculation disorder
Depression (rare)
Breast tenderness or enlargement
Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., rash, pruritus)
These side effects often resolve after discontinuation.
Warnings & Precautions
Not indicated for use in women or children
Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets due to risk of absorption and fetal harm
Routine monitoring is not usually necessary unless used in BPH cases
Drug Interactions
Finasteride does not significantly interact with most medications
No impact on CYP450 system
Storage
Store below 30°C
Keep out of reach of children
Patient Counseling Points
Take daily at the same time
Hair regrowth requires continuous use
Discontinue and consult a doctor if sexual side effects are persistent or troubling
Tablets must be swallowed whole; do not crush or break
Finasteride (1 mg) is not recommended for use in women, especially:
1. Pregnant or Potentially Pregnant Women – Absolutely Contraindicated
Finasteride can cause severe birth defects in male fetuses (abnormal development of external genitalia).
Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets, as the active ingredient can be absorbed through the skin.
2. Postmenopausal Women – Off-label & Limited Evidence
Some dermatologists may prescribe finasteride off-label for postmenopausal women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL), especially if other treatments (like minoxidil) fail.
However:
It is not FDA-approved for use in women.
Efficacy is inconsistent in women compared to men.
Hormonal evaluations (e.g., testosterone, estrogen levels) are usually done before starting.
3. Premenopausal Women – Not Recommended
Finasteride can affect hormonal balance, menstrual cycles, and fertility.
It may be considered in rare, closely monitored cases, usually with contraception to avoid pregnancy risk.
